The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has just announced that the Minnesota current chief will be its next music director, beginning at the 2020 season, for an initial contract of three years.
Vänskä has recently announced that he will be stepping down from his distinguished post as the Minnesota Orchestra’s Music Director, a position he held from 2003 and will end in 2022. His years in Minnesota saw successful concerts and world tours, as well as some remarkable recordings, namely his Beethoven Symphonies cycle and his Mahler cycle, the recent release of which we covered here.

“It is a great pleasure to partner with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in this new leadership role”, said the conductor in a press release. “I look forward to working with the musicians and orchestra administration to create interesting programmes and inspiring concerts for the enthusiastic audiences of Seoul.”
Annette Kang, President and CEO of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, has added that Vänskä’s relationship with the orchestra has produced some of the most electrifying concerts they have heard these last few years.
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1945, and rebranded in its current form in 2005. It is one of the leading orchestras in South East Asia, and is well respected for attracting new audiences with unique programs and artistic collaborations.
