The Iceland Symphony Orchestra (ISO) announced today the appointment of soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan as their Chief Conductor and Artistic Director. Hannigan’s three-season term will begin in August 2026.
Hannigan expressed her enthusiasm for the ISO, citing their “technical excellence” and “wonderful imagination” as factors in her decision. The orchestra’s Managing Director, Lára Sóley Jóhannsdóttir, praised Hannigan’s unique talents and her potential to influence the orchestra and Icelandic cultural life.
This appointment builds upon a history of successful collaborations between Hannigan and the ISO. Their partnership began in 2022 with a well-received debut at the ReykjavÃk Arts Festival, followed by additional performances in 2023 and 2024. These collaborations showcased Hannigan’s versatility, both as a conductor and a singer, and offered a glimpse into the artistic direction she may bring to the orchestra.
Hannigan succeeds conductor Eva Ollikainen, who has served as the ISO’s Chief Conductor since 2020. Ollikainen’s tenure was marked by critically acclaimed performances, including a lauded UK tour in 2023. The ISO has a history of attracting prominent conductors, including Osmo Vänskä, whose leadership is credited with raising the orchestra’s international profile.
