Sad news from Barcelona, where the renowned soprano was hospitalised in the past few weeks – Montserrat Caballé has died at the age of 85.
Caballé, known worldwide for her penetrating and dramatic voice and dramatic capabilities, spent much of her time in recent years giving masterclasses, teaching and working in charity organisations, including work as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
Her final years were unfortunately plagued by legal battles with the Spanish government over tax evasion accusations, in which she was found guilty of and given a suspended jail sentence.
Caballé will also be remembered by her treasured pop-duet “Barcelona” with Freddy Mercury, in the late 1980’s.
