Omer Meir Wellber has been appointed as the new Chief Conductor for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the British Broadcast Corporation has announced.
Wellber, 36, will replace conductor Juanjo Mena, the Philharmonic’s Chief Conductor from 2011. The appointment will take place from the 2019-2020 season, with an initial contract for 4 years.
“I first worked with the BBC Philharmonic in March and knew straight away that they were a very special group of people and exceptional musicians”. Said Wellber in the BBC’s press release. “Manchester and the whole region is an incredibly rich area culturally, so I can hardly wait to start planning seasons to come”.
The Israeli born conductor will also take on a Music Director position at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo from 2020.
