Streaming Finds: Neumann’s Late Mahler Cycle (Canyon Label)

For Mahler enthusiasts and seasoned collectors, Václav Neumann’s complete Mahler cycle with the Czech Philharmonic for Supraphon (1976–1982) is very familiar. Less widely discussed, yet equally compelling, are the conductor’s late-career remake recordings for the Japanese Canyon Classics label, featuring the same orchestra with much superior sonics.

These fascinating interpretations, recorded in the mid-1990s as Neumann neared the end of his illustrious career, offer a more mature and often starker perspective on Mahler’s monumental soundscapes. While the partial cycle (which included symphonies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) might require a dedicated search for physical discs, Apple Music currently offers five albums from this remake (still missing symphony No. 5 from this cycle, while No. 9 was a reissue of the digital Supraphon recording, also available on streaming).

Delving into these digital finds provides a unique opportunity to experience a maestro’s final thoughts on Mahler’s masterpieces.
