The American pianist Eric Lu has been chosen as the winner of the prestigious Leeds Piano Competition for 2018.
Lu (20) is not new to taking prizes – He has won several in major competitions, including the “International German Piano Award, Frankfurt” (1st Prize) and more notably the 2015 Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, where he picked up the 4th price at age only 17. A student at the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia), his teachers include Dang Thai Son, Jonathan Biss and Robert McDonald.
In the Finals, Lu performed Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto, which apperanty won over the jury, this year included a diverse company of musicians and key figures in the classical music industry – Pianists Paul Lewis, Imogen Cooper, Lars Vogt, Shai Wosner and Sa Chen, along with violinist Henning Kraggerud, conductor Adam Gatehouse, composer Thomas Larcher and head of Southbank Centre in London, Gillian Moore.
Lu was awarded £25,000, and was also chosen as the accompanying orchestra favorite – The Hallé Orchestra under conductor Edward Gardner – Which in addition to £5,500 will have the winner on three paid engagements and an invitation to perform in the Manchester Midday Concerts series at the Bridgewater Hall. In addition, Lu’s winning the first prize will allow him to engage with other orchestras and on other venues in Europe, including recording sessions with BBC Radio 3 and Warner Classics.
