Winners of the 2019 Grammy Awards for Classical Music Announced

Composer Aaron Jay Kernis, violinist James Ehnes and Andris Nelson with his Boston Symphony are among the winners in the 2019 Grammys for classical music.

The violinist’s album took home two awards, one for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo” and another for “Best Contemporary Classical Composition”. Kernis’ Violin Concertos appeared last year on the Onyx label, to universal acclaim.

Andris Nelson’s album of Shostakovich’s symphonies No. 4 and 11 took home two prizes: One for “Best Orchestral Performance” and another for ”Best Engineered Album” recognizing the spectacular recording quality this Boston series enjoys on Deutsche Grammophon.

For the “Best Classical Solo Vocal Album” award, Jeanette Sorrell and the Apollo’s Fire Ensemble received the prize for their album “Song of Orpheus“, and multidisciplinary artist Laurie Anderson was awarded the ”Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance” prize for her album “Landfall” with the Kronos Quartet.
