This is Yo-Yo Ma’s third recording of Bach’s Six Unaccompanied Cello Suites, and the question on everyone’s mind is, “What is different?” On the one hand, not much has changed in Ma’s interpretation of the preludes and dances that comprise the suites. Nor were the first two versions weak in any way; they can still firmly hold their own in the catalog 35 years after the initial release.
That first release (1983) was confident, technically superb, and exceptionally well-recorded for the early digital age. The second (1997), which accompanied six short films—one for each suite—featured a lower pitch and was overall more extravagant in character. This third installment belongs more to the world of the first recording, though it brings an added profundity—maturity, perhaps?—and a sense of inner calmness not immediately apparent in Ma’s younger self.
If you are looking for the outgoing romanticism, full bows, and generous vibrato of, say, Rostropovich or Fournier, look elsewhere. Ma uses a modern bow and strings, but akin to many of today’s period-instrument specialists, his use of vibrato is sparse, applied strictly as a decorative element or when it inherently suits the musical phrase.
With Ma, one never forgets that these are inherently dances. Even when he takes certain rhythmic liberties, the sustained beat remains a strong anchor, giving each dance movement its structural backbone.
Many cellists treat the Fifth Suite as an outburst of tragedy and sorrow (Mischa Maisky comes to mind). Here, notice how Yo-Yo Ma’s approach is quieter and more inward-looking. Of the two approaches, it is Ma’s that will send a chill down your spine.
Sony has wisely priced this 2-CD release at the cost of a single disc (though the vinyl edition understandably commands the full double amount). The recording, captured at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts, is of demonstration quality. This release can be recommended without reservation to any listener who prefers their Bach played with genuine inner power rather than forced superficiality.
